Emerging from the polders, this charming little town has long been a favored vacation spot for artists in search of a calm, pleasant environment. Bergen even had a painting school, founded in 1915, as well as a popular university, at a time when socialist theses were in vogue. In 1917, the architects of the Amsterdam School built the Artists' Village, a residence of eighteen villas (privately owned, but unfortunately not open to the public) in the Meerwijk Park. The town's many galleries date from the same period, making it something of a Dutch Pont-Aven.
