This brewery, a reference to Monninckendam, is located in a magnificent historic building just a stone's throw from the port. The monumental stone building was once the town's weigh house, trading in butter, cheese and cereals. Today, brothers Jens and Boy Bosman, from a family of local restaurateurs, run the restaurant. It's a beautiful place, neat and elegant. The extensive menu features local specialties and fresh meat and fish. A very good address!

Welcome to De Waegh!

In the heart of Monnickendam, you can now enjoy various Mediterranean meat and fish dishes!

Waegh is an old Dutch word related to home and weighing. There was already a Waegh building in Monnickendam in 1382, which was destroyed by fire in 1666. The present Waegh dates from 1668, built from the remains of its predecessor. The Waegh was the economic centre of the town and actually had two functions: the Waegh building (inside, where everything was weighed) and the Beurs (outside under the roof, where negotiations took place). The building was used for weighing and trading butter, cheese and grain. The original balances are still a nice detail from that time.

The room upstairs was used as a council meeting room. This council consisted of four mayors and several councillors. Over the centuries, De Waegh was used as a shelter for militiamen and firemen. During the First World War, it served as a distribution office and was a temporary 'guest house' for the sick. In the 19th century, gortpap was distributed every day in winter under the roof. The Monnickendammer owe their nickname 'troeters' to this event: the gortpap was then called 'troet'.

Since 1 January 2018, De Waegh has been in the hands of twins Boy and Jens Bosman. They were given the opportunity to take on this business and they did so straight away. Full of enthusiasm and passion for cooking, they continue De Waegh.

Bel établissement et plats copieux

Nous avons déjeuné dans cette brasserie lors de notre passage au port de Monnickendam. C'est un très beau batiment en plein centre de la ville. Les plats sont copieux et frais. Service en français (approximatif, mais quand même!). C'est une bonne adresse, sympa pour faire une pause
