The town of Monnickendam ("the monks' dike") faces the peninsula of Marken. Like Marken, it was founded in the 13th century by Frisian monks. But while Marken soon became Protestant, Monnickendam always remained Catholic. Perhaps a little less charming than other places, it is a small but very active marina, where it will be easy to find a boat to rent for a trip (or more) on the IJ. A village with a lot of charm that we like to visit. For an even more authentic ride, don't hesitate to rent bicycles from Ber Koning (+31 299 651 267) at Noordeinde 12.
