Surrounded by grain fields, this city of more than 5,600 inhabitants located at 640 meters above sea level is at the gateway to Andalusia. Its beautiful Plaza Mayor, surrounded by arcades with a fountain designed by Zurbarán, is noteworthy. The artist lived here for thirteen years. The church of Nuestra Señora de la Granada, with its baroque bell tower and elegant double arcade, was the seat of the Inquisition. Not far away, the convent and the church of Santa Clara, a 16th century building with a sculpture by Juan Martínez Montañés, are of classical architecture.
