Travel Guide Pastrana

Located between the rivers Tagus and Tajuña, this medieval-looking town in Alcarria is one of the most important in the province with 885 inhabitants. The village grew considerably in the 12th century, when it belonged to the Order of Calatrava. It was during this period that the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (today's Iglesia Colegiata) was built, remodeled and enlarged many times. Today it houses Flemish tapestries from the 15th century and the painting of San Jerónimo, which is attributed to El Greco. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when Pastrana was at its peak, the monuments were built that have earned it the status of historical site. The most important of them all, the Ducal Palace, stands in the Plaza de la Hora. It is a Renaissance structure with Mannerist elements from the 16th century, designed by Alonso de Covarrubias. In addition to the palace, the convent of San Francisco, founded by St. Teresa, is worth mentioning. Important remains of the castle and the walls remain, and in its streets you can admire beautiful facades and buildings of traditional architecture, most of them dating from the seventeenth century.
