This beautiful town owes its heritage to the powerful order of Calatrava and to bankers from the House of Austria who came to do business with the mines of Almadén during the Renaissance. The town is as famous for its handmade lace as it is for its pickled eggplant with a designation of origin. The Plaza Mayor is sumptuous. In 1954, during work on a poor inn, a priceless jewel was discovered: a theater from the 16th century, a corral de las comedias, which has been restored and is worth the trip. In July it hosts a classical theater festival, the most important in Spain.
