Situated 40 km from the capital, this attractive little staircase town of over 6,400 inhabitants boasts a superb, little-known artistic ensemble, most of which can be found around the Plaza de España. The city's Renaissance bridge, Puente de las Doncellas Donadas, named after the ladies who donated their jewels so that construction could begin in 1498, spans the meandering Guadalquivir River. The oxidized red of its buttresses and surrounding land contrasts sharply with the white of its alleyways. From the suburb of Guardería on the left bank, the visual shock is impressive enough to merit a stopover.
