In the past, this small town, located 8 km east of Heraklion, was one of the three ports of Knossos. The river Karteros was used for the launching of Minoan ships. Today, the only interest in Amnissos is its beach. The beach of Tombrouk is a little less frequented. However, do not underestimate the proximity of the airport and the planes that fly over the place very frequently, especially in high season, which disrupts the swimming. From Heraklion, take bus number 7 from Eleftherias square, in front of the archaeological museum. The trip takes about 20 minutes (buy your ticket at the newsstand on the square).
