Located in the suburbs of Tunis, 10 km from the capital, La Goulette is the first port of Tunisia. Its name comes from the Italian " goleta ", a deformation of the Arabic "Halk el Oued". The city has suffered many attacks, the most memorable of which was that of Barbarossa in 1534. Charles V, who seized it, had a Spanish-Turkish fortress built on the heights of the city, which was used for a long time as a prison. The city was then more famous for its prison than for its fishing port. Tourists are content to cross this port on their way to Carthage. Too bad, because La Goulette is a good stop for its culinary specialty, fish.
