City of 62 000 inhabitants, located 110 km west of Tunis. Founded in the Phoenician era, Beja has a rich history. Its status as a granary (the Medjerda valley is one of the main waterways of the country) made it the target of attacks by the Romans, the Vandals and then the Arabs. Despite these invasions, the ancient Vaga remained an important center for the Byzantines. It is worth seeing today for its kasbah, an ancient Byzantine citadel with twenty square towers, certainly very damaged, but which proudly overlooks the city. Today, only two towers and a dungeon remain. In the medina, rich in mosques, you can visit the small mausoleum of Sidi Bou Arbaa located near the busy street of Kheireddine. From this street, you will reach Bab el Aïn and its old fountain. A city established on the side of a mountain in amphitheatre, Béjà remains famous for its rich and fertile lands: wheat, sugar beet and sunflower seeds. A British cemetery with 396 graves is located north of the city.Nearby, you can visit Djebba-Thibar, the oasis of the peaks: a hidden village in the Medjerda valley, overlooked by a splendid mountainous site to be discovered far from any agitation. You can also see the ruins of its castle of the Seven Sleepers and the bridge of Trajan, or take the GP6, then the MC59 towards Bulla Regia.
