Utica was one of the most important cities of Africa during the Antiquity. The ancient capital, which rallied to Rome during the third Punic war, no longer has much in the way of a Roman city, but one nevertheless thinks of its long history as one drives through it. Coming from Tunis, the approach to the city coincides with the appearance of the first olive trees. It should be noted that Cato of Utica (93-46 BC), great-grandson of Cato the Elder (the one who affirmed Rome's determination to destroy Carthage), was not born in Utica, but committed suicide there when he learned that his leader had been defeated by Caesar's troops at the battle of Thapsus. This nickname was given to him post-mortem.
