12 km from Hammamet, Nabeul, the ancient Neapolis, capital of the Cap Bon governorate, is an important craft center. It is also the capital of pottery; on the majority of the potteries that you will find in all the country, the seal "Nabeul" certifies the quality of the product. Nabeul is a true ancient city and not only a seaside resort. The history of the city goes back to the 4th century BC, as evidenced by the Phoenician remains. Smaller than Hammamet, Nabeul does not have a past as a fishing port. Its first vocation was elsewhere: it was a place of exchange for the agricultural products of the peninsula and an important center of craft industry, activity which was perpetuated until our days. To quote in first place, the glazed pottery, introduced by the Andalusians in the XVth century and of which many bazaars and stores made a speciality. In Nabeul, we also practice embroidery in silk thread and silver, the distillation of perfumes and ceramic work. The Friday market here offers a most diversified spectacle. Nabeul is also known for the brick factories scattered in its surroundings. Finally, Nabeul is also the most important producer of rush mats called "smar", which allow to weave wall or floor mats that can be admired in many mosques. Gargotes and good restaurants await you, especially for fish lovers.
