17 km west of Szécsény by road 22, Balassagyarmat also faces Slovakia. This city in many Baroque buildings saw two famous Hungarian writers from the th century: Imre Madách, author of the Tragedy of Man, and Kálmán Mikszáth (The umbrella of Saint Peter). Two major points of interest in the city: the Palóc Ethnographic Museum, which presents one of the most important exhibitions on the palóc culture and the immense Jewish cemetery.
