"The very noble and loyal city of Cartago was the capital and cultural cradle of Costa Rica during the period of Spanish sovereignty (until 1823). It is now the religious capital and one of the provincial capitals. Founded in 1563 by Juan Vásquez de Coronado, the conqueror of central Costa Rica, the city does not preserve much of its prestigious past: in 1841 and in 1910, terrible earthquakes destroyed everything that made it a historical city. Every August 2, nearly 2 million people come here in a great pilgrimage to pay homage to the Virgin of Los Angeles.
