This town has lived off its mineral wealth for many centuries, particularly the silver that gives it its name. The Romans already exploited its subsoil, and mining ceased in 1963. But a semblance of life persists in this 19th-century mining center, thanks to tourism. The mine buildings are one of the finest testimonies to the island's industrial past. The local beach is very pretty, and there are one or two good restaurants on the way down to the sea. The bay of Porto Palmas, north of Argentiera, is even more beautiful. Finally, it's the most unspoilt corner of nature in this region of Sardinia.
