Southport is an important commercial and administrative center at the northern end of the huge Gold Coast city. Protected from the Pacific by the Spit, a long sand dune, Southport was one of the first villages to be founded on this part of the coast, and by the 1890s was already a popular resort. The town gradually gained ground and developed around the natural Broadwater basin, before moving to the west side of the Spit. The Spit has also become a popular surfing spot. Main Beach to the east, on the other hand, has been pleasantly preserved. Parks and playgrounds line the shoreline.
