Serres is a modern and prosperous town whose origins date back to the 12th century B.C. Herodotus named it Siris the Paeonic (the healer). In the Byzantine period, the city was used as a fortress against the Bulgarian invasion. It was colonized by the French in 1204, by the Bulgarians in 1205 and 1230, by the Serbs in 1345 and, in 1368, by the Turks, from whom it was only liberated in 1913, thanks to the Bucharest peace agreements. The town is of little interest from a tourist point of view, but is a convenient stopover for visiting the region. Getting there. Serres can be reached by bus from Thessaloniki (www.ktelmacedonia.gr) and by train (trainose.gr).
