Veria is a small town of Macedonia finally still rather ignored. It is the closest city to the site of Vergina (13 km), where is in particular the tomb of Philip II of Macedonia. It is in this city that Alexander began his instruction. The Roman and then Byzantine periods turned it into a small Jerusalem with 48 Byzantine churches where a large Jewish community resisted the many waves of occupation. Today, the churches, the Byzantine museum, the Jewish cemetery and synagogue, and the old town bear witness to this rich past.Getting there. Veria can be reached by bus from Thessaloniki (www.ktelmacedonia.gr) and by train (trainose.gr).
