BYZANTIN MUSEUM
The Byzantine Museum of Veria is housed in a majestic 1911 industrial monument located within the boundaries of the traditional district of Kyriotissa, next to the old city walls. Located in an old mill, renovated after a fire, it houses some wonderful pieces of Byzantine art and well-preserved 15th century frescoes in particular. The explanatory panels are here in Greek and English. The museum is very well laid out and the few exhibits are excellently displayed. In a column of light, an icon of St. George dating from the 12th century is to be admired, the reverse side of which was also used later, in the 18th century. Throughout your visit, you will be able to admire very beautiful icons which are also, for the most part, painted on both sides. You can also see a collection of Byzantine coins, renowned at the time for their stability of exchange and used in exchanges throughout the Mediterranean world. The reconstruction of a 19th century lord's residence also gives an idea of life here in the Byzantine period. Also of note is the mosaic floor, originally 86 m², and a tombstone in memory of a servant. On the ground floor, the museum guards can show you a 20-minute film on the history of the museum and its collection. To continue the visit, a combined ticket with the Archaeological Museum of Veria and the site of Vergina is available for 15 €.
