Charming port where a stopover is essential. The city was founded by Athens around 459 BC as a base for its fleet. In 429 B.C., it was the scene of the victory of the same Athenians over the Peloponnese. Conquered by the Persians, then by Philip of Macedonia, it was known from the Middle Ages onwards under the name of Lepanto. Besieged by the Ottomans in 1477, it was the scene of a bloody battle between the Holy League and Turkish forces in 1571. The victory was Christian, but was to have no effect, since Lepanto was taken from the Venetians by the Ottomans in 1699. It was during this battle that Cervantes lost a hand.
