Even if you are not a fan of the writings of the great Nikos Kazantzakis, the walk to Myrtia is worth a visit. For fans of the Cretan author par excellence, it is a must. The village, located 25 km south of Heraklion, is reached by a little-used road that passes through Skalani and runs east along the main road down to Peza. The museum dedicated to the creator of the mythical Alexis Zorba is located in the main square near some very nice kafeneia where it is good to stop for a drink. Nearby, the monastery of Agarathos, one of the oldest in Crete, is also worth a visit.
