A sentinel jealously guards the fertile lands of Messinia: Koroni, which raises its threatening fortress above the waves. The city was taken by the Franks in 1205, and a year later by the Venetians, who built the fortress. In 1500, the inhabitants rose up against the Italians and handed the city over to the Ottomans. Despite a quick passage of the Genoese in 1532, then that of the Spanish in 1662, then again of the Venetians, the Ottomans settled in as masters of the place. These covetousnesses are due to the strategic position of Koroni, to protect the gulf. Far from all these considerations, it is a small peaceful village.
