At 65 km from Kalamata, Methoni is famous for its beautiful impregnable fortress, but which was nevertheless... taken! The city being surrounded by vineyards, its name would come from the Greek metho ("to get drunk") and onoi ("donkeys"), in memory, it is said, of the poor beasts which staggered because of the alcohol vapors of the wine they carried.
