At 65 km from Kalamata, Methoni is famous for its beautiful impregnable fortress, but which was nevertheless... taken! The city being surrounded by vineyards, its name would come from the Greek metho ("to get drunk") and onoi ("donkeys"), in memory, it is said, of the poor beasts which staggered because of the alcohol vapors of the wine they carried. So, if you are interested in the local wines, if you want to discover a beautiful village at the southwestern tip of the Peloponnese and a well-preserved Venetian fortress, come and visit Methoni. Be careful, during the first two weeks of August, the city is crowded with Greek tourists, so remember to make reservations
