Built in an arc, dominated by Mount Koumario and topped by a citadel, the town of Gythio is the starting point for a visit to the Laconian Mountains. A pleasant town of 8,000 inhabitants, it has become a favourite with tourists. The main street, along the port, offers a succession of taverns that the local fishmongers supply every day. Opposite, the islet of Kranaï or Marathonissi is sleeping, witness of the love story of the beautiful Helen kidnapped by Paris who took her to Troy.
