The capital of northern Pemba, Wete is the second largest town with nearly 30,000 inhabitants. The town developed thanks to its port, strategically located opposite Tanga, which has since been eclipsed by the port of Mkoani to the south, facing Zanzibar, the regional capital. The boats unload cement and wood to embark cloves and coconuts. Ruins of the Persian Shirazian civilization exist on the small island of Mtambwe which can be reached by a small local boat, as well as the micro island of Fundo. There are a few accommodation options in Wete. The town is very quiet, articulated along a large central street
