Pella, an ancient city of the Decapolis, is located about 20 km southwest of Irbid, near the small village of Taqabat Fahel. The site was inhabited from at least 10,000 BC until the 15th century. This particularity of uninterrupted occupation, rare in the Near East, constitutes a real mine of information for archaeologists. From prehistoric man to the Mamluks, the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Seleucids, the Romans, the Christians of Jerusalem, the Byzantines and the Abbasids, the history that took place here is inexhaustible. Today, the site of Pella is little restored, as excavations are still in progress. However, the ancient city is in a beautiful setting and offers superb views of the Jordan Valley.
