Kardjali (65,000 inhabitants) is the capital of the Eastern Rhodopes, one of the least developed regions of the country. With a turbulent history of Turkish-Bulgarian history, it is the Bulgarian city with the highest percentage of Turks among its population. Not very touristy, poor economically and in terms of infrastructure, but interesting on several levels, people come here mainly for excursions in the surrounding area. All around there are beautiful mountains with, among others, original rock formations. Kardjali is nowadays an important centre of the Turkish community in the country, even if it has declined since the 1980s with successive waves of emigration.
