Between the Pirin and the Rhodopes, Dolen is one of those preserved perched villages, identified as a "reserve of architectural heritage". Typical of the Rhodopes with its two-storey houses, supported by a solid stone base where the cattle slept, and topped with lauze roofs, this steep village is served by stony lanes, a picturesque setting used in the shooting of many Bulgarian films. Dolen was distinguished by its resistance to the Ottomans. The village is famous for its wine production. To see: the church of Saint Nicholas, whose icons were painted by George Filipov, and the Nikolovski fountain.
