In the eastern Balkan Mountains, the small town of Kotel, cradle of the Bulgarian national revival, is very pretty, pleasant, and contains interesting sites. Founded during the early years of Ottoman rule by local Bulgarians who wanted to escape the invaders, Kotel is the birthplace of several celebrities, among them Rakovski, the nationalist revolutionary. A fire in 1894 destroyed much of the city, but today 110 houses from the national revival era remain in the Galata district. Carpets are the trademark of the city. Its surroundings are a good place to watch predatory birds.
