This city of 85,000 inhabitants is nicknamed the "Royal Lotus City". It was heavily influenced by neighboring Laos and Cambodia, of course, but also by Vietnam and the USA during the wars that ravaged Southeast Asia. Today, local authorities are trying to promote the "Emerald Triangle", where three countries meet: Laos, Cambodia and Thailand. But the concept has yet to catch on. The town does, however, boast a number of fine temples and organizes a renowned annual festival: the "Candlelight Festival", in early July. The area around Ubon is full of national parks and natural attractions.
