This peaceful town, at the confluence of the Mekong and Sedone rivers, was chosen as the capital of Champassak province by the French in the early 20th century. It is one of the most important cities in the country from an economic point of view (trade in wood, coffee, tea and cardamom, among others). It has about 80,000 inhabitants and its population is made up of Lao Loum, Khatu, Khamu and Khatan, as well as Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese communities. In recent years, Pakse has undergone a metamorphosis in terms of its infrastructure and has been transformed into a real commercial zone near the new bridge over the Mekong River.
