Founded in 1262 by King Mengrai, whose statue can be seen in the town center, it lost its status to Chiang Mai a few years later. The province is bordered by Myanmar and Laos, hence the nickname "Golden Triangle". Gold, of course, means opium. Opium trafficking still existed some 30 years ago. Today, the authorities are actively cracking down, as Myanmar is still one of the world's leading opium producers, along with Afghanistan and Pakistan. Beware, however, on your excursions to the region: from December to February, it can get really cold.
