Population approx. 3,200. One of the two "towns" of Bela Krajina, the other being Črnomelj and undoubtedly the more beautiful. Numerous traces of prehistoric settlement have been found here. In the Middle Ages, the town briefly belonged to the Kingdom of Croatia, before joining the Carniolan fold and gaining city status in 1335. Its geostrategic position reinforced its status for a time. Turkish assaults followed one another in the 15th and 16th centuries, and the town became a rather effective fortress. The town was also a centre of Slovenian Protestantism. A charming stopover on the road to Croatia!
