It's the island's capital, home to most of the administrative services, a few shops, the airport and the old French buildings. Its architectural harmony bears witness to its past prosperity, much of it linked to whaling. The first registration of the municipality in 1548 referred to a village. The area is described as a "well-divided, flat town" covered with thatched roofs. The few remarkable buildings will soon be spotted, but it's a must if you're stopping off on the charming island of Flores. The Miradouros do Monte and do Monte das Cruzes offer fine views over the town.
