The road does not go any further. The lighthouse, built in 1922, was erected on a high cliff. A real feat of construction, at that time there was no road access to Ponta do Albarnaz, it marks the west of the Azores archipelago as well as the arrival towards Europe for most of the maritime traffic that arrives in this area. Operating since 1956 with generators, it is since 2005 the only lighthouse in the country that has not been connected to the electrical grid. Offshore, you can see the islet of Maria Vaz (also called "da Gadelha") and, further away, the islet of Monchique, the most western point of Europe.
