This gigantic glacial lake has an incomparable emerald color. With a depth of almost 500 m, it is the tenth deepest lake in the world. Contrary to its shape, it is not a volcanic crater lake. Some sixty rivers flow into the lake, making it a rich source of fish for anglers who enjoy trout and salmon. Water transparency is also exceptional: visibility is 30 m. The river is 35 km long and 20 km wide, and can be circumnavigated by car in around two hours. On the other hand, the landscape is much more beautiful and natural to the north. South Lake Tahoe, on the border between the two states, is logically the most developed town. Several tourist villages have sprung up, some distinguished and others more simple, attracting large numbers of visitors in summer for hiking and white-water sports. In winter, skiers enjoy the slopes of the mountains surrounding the lake. The prettiest villages are on the Californian side, while the Nevada side is characterized by appalling casino hotels.
