Although John Sutter's sawmill was more than 40 kilometers from Sutter Creek, he often stopped off here to recharge his batteries and get away from the gold rush crowds. Some time later, however, the town became a coveted spot for gold miners. Since then, the mines have remained part of the landscape, but vineyards have proliferated in the region, bringing considerable renown to Amador County. Sutter Creek is a small, pedestrian-friendly town where you can delight in the many charming boutiques on the main street.
