The small town of Volcano, with barely 2,000 inhabitants, was a sugar plantation town in the 19th century thanks to the fertility of its volcanic soil. The village nestled among the tree ferns has kept all its charm of yesteryear and it is particularly pleasant to stay there. Only a few minutes drive from the entrance of the national park, it is worth spending one or two nights there to be able to see the eruption at night. The village has two mini-markets, a gas station and four cafes, but everything closes in the late afternoon. Finally the village has an art gallery and several artists open their studios.
