On the road between Ashburton (35 km) and Lake Tekapo (88 km), this town of 2,800 souls, founded in 1854, is surrounded by forests and pastures. In the past, it was very active in forestry. Today it is a quiet town known for its artists. Appreciated for its nature, don't miss a walk on the many hiking and biking trails of the Peel Forest: a forest reserve filled with podocarps of over 700 hectares. Geraldine was also known as home to one of the country's best private stargazing observatories. The Starlight Highway begins in this community.
