Built in 1968, Twizel was intended to accommodate the construction workers of the Waitaki Power Development hydroelectric stations and even had 5,800 residents in the 1970s. It was not destined to last and yet it is the largest community in the Mackenzie District with 1670 inhabitants according to the last census. It benefits from its proximity to the Aoraki Mount Cook, the beautiful lakes of Pukaki and Ohau, and the ski resort of the latter. It is an ideal base town for travel to Mount Cook National Park, especially for accommodations, which are less expensive and less complex to book.
