On the road between Tekapo (30 min, 47 km) and the east coast (45 min, 60 km), Fairlie is more a stopover village than a real destination, just before climbing the New Zealand Alps. Home to 930 souls, it is also the gateway to the very wild Mackenzie District. The district is named after the Scottish sheep thief James Mackenzie. There is not much to do in town other than visit museums such as the Fairlie Heritage Museum. The town is especially crowded during the ski season at Mount Dobson (known as Dobo) and Roundhill. After Burke Pass you will be climbing the high altitude mountain.
