Although a little less impressive than its neighbor to the north, Fox Glacier is wider and longer, at some 13 kilometers. It begins at an altitude of more than 2,750 meters and ends at 240 meters above sea level. Interestingly, the colossus has reversed its course: after retreating for more than a hundred years until 1987, it is now advancing towards the coast, which is only 15 kilometers away. The small village of 350 inhabitants is less developed than Franz Josef and attracts fewer people.
