Once a modest hamlet before the arrival of tourists, Franz Josef is today a village that does not empty and counts a little more than 500 inhabitants. People come here for its legendary glacier and the observation of such a site at such a low altitude is very rare in the world. Only Argentina and New Zealand can boast of it! It is one of the main attractions of the Westland Tai Poutini National Park. With time and money, a helicopter ride to see these icy giants is a must. Otherwise, there are wonderful hikes such as the Alex Knob track (17.2 km, 8 hours) or the Robert Point track (12.3 km, 5 hours).
