Ancient Kororareka was the first permanent settlement site for Europeans in the country. They built a trading port and began trading with the Maoris. But this small, prosperous, lawless community soon became known as "The Hell Hole of the Pacific" because of the prostitution and drinking that was common there until the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. It was briefly the capital before Auckland. Flagstaff Hill (Maiki) saw the British flagpole cut down four times in a row by Chief Hone Heke. Today, it is a small haven of peace, less frequented than Paihia.
