From time to time, dolphins visit the bay bordering the port of Hokianga. In the summer of 1955, Opo, a young female dolphin, became famous for her exceptional relationship with humans. She came to play with the children on the beach and began to attract more and more people. The government decided to protect her, but she was found dead on March 9, 1956, probably killed while fishing with an explosive. She was given a traditional Maori burial and is still the village mascot. The area is also famous for the Koutu and Wairere Boulders.
