The small town of Rawene, population 500, was New Zealand's third European colony and has preserved much of its original heritage, such as the 1860s Clendon House. French explorer Jean-François de Surville discovered the port of Hokianga in 1769, just before James Cook. Hokianga was once a prosperous port, benefiting from the kauri wood trade. The southern part of the port is a pleasant place to stroll, particularly on the footbridge through the mangroves.
