Although not as touristy as Paihia and Russell, Kerikeri has the two oldest buildings in the country (the Stone Store and the Kemp House) and was the site of the first kumara (a type of sweet potato) plantations in New Zealand. Its vocation has remained agricultural, largely focused on citrus fruits and kiwis and with a population larger than its neighbors (7,300 inhabitants). The region is also a wine-growing area and will please wine lovers. The road leading to the city is lined with orchards and wineries where you can shop. Just outside of town, you will find the Rainbow Falls (20 minutes round trip).
