Troina (10,000 inhabitants), perched on a rocky ridge at an altitude of 1,220 m, has a medieval layout with narrow, sloping streets that criss-cross the centre. Chosen as the centre of the conquest of the island by King Roger, it became the capital and seat of the first episcopate of Sicily before the advent of Palermo. The city still preserves traces of walls dating back to the Greek era near the ruins of the ancient Capuchin convent. Count Roger Street is lined with old palaces. The Norman mother church has Byzantine paintings and an interesting treasure, including a ring of Count Roger and a 14th century Gothic crucifix.
