The ancient Syracusan settlement on the south-western foothills of Mount Etna, founded by Denys in 263 B.C., was located near the temple of the god Adranon, where dogs were consecrated. The ruins of the city walls and the keep of Denys remain from this period. The city was an important crossroads between the important cities of Gela, Catania and Messina. It has always been strategic until our era, when the Germans and the Allies clashed there in 1943. The oldest traces of this history are concentrated in the Norman tower, which dates back to the year 1000. Adrano is served by the Ferrovia Circumetnea train company.
