At Mistretta (950 m above sea level) the Nebrodi mountain range begins. The town has the ruins of a feudal castle, which was built on a rock, and the medieval church of Santa Lucia, remodeled in 1630, with a marble altar dating back to the 16th century and decorated with saints and apostles in bas-relief. The city has also preserved beautiful Renaissance and Baroque palaces. Today it has more than 5,000 inhabitants. On the Tyrrhenian side of the mountain range, Mistretta is a perfect base camp for excursions, especially to the forests of Mistretta and Giumenta.
